Why Do Some Books Not Sell Even After Marketing?

Why Do Some Books Not Sell Even After Marketing?

Let me share a secret. After assisting hundreds of writers transform into published authors, I’ve discovered an inconvenient truth: even stellar marketing can’t save certain books.

Last year, Jaishankar*, a brilliant thriller writer, invested thousands in marketing. He hired social media managers and booked podcast interviews. His book did not do as well as expected. Why? The answer lies deeper than mere promotion.

The truth about marketing is that it amplifies what already exists. It can’t fix fundamental issues, either in writing or publishing, and most readers notice these issues instantly. Think of marketing as a megaphone. If your message is unclear, a louder voice won’t help. It simply broadcasts the problem to more people. Rather than telling the audience why they should read your book, it convinces them, even without your knowing consciously, why the reader shouldn’t pick your book!

Here are a few invisible barriers to book promotion, and this article may help writers overcome these before they jump into marketing in the hope that marketing alone will take them to wherever they wish to be.

Issue #1 – Target Audience Confusion

“Who is this book for?” I ask every author who walks through my door.

Most stare blankly before answering, “Everyone!”

This is your first mistake. No book appeals to everyone. When you market romance novels to thriller readers, you waste resources. Your book must find its true audience – those who will genuinely connect with your story.

Shila* wrote a brilliant historical romance but marketed it to young adult readers. Her sales suffered despite her fantastic writing. So, redirecting to the right target audience is not only essential but a necessity.

We ensure that our writers understand who their book is for and thereafter set the expectations accordingly.

Issue #2 – Cover Catastrophes

Picture yourself browsing on Amazon or Goodreads. What makes you pick up a book? The cover grabs you first.

Your cover is your handshake with potential readers. A weak one sends them walking. Professional design isn’t optional – it’s essential.

Deep’s* self-help book contained life-changing advice. Yet his homemade cover screamed “amateur” with poor typography and poorer stock images.

At TWAGAA, we take a lot of pride in designing the book cover, thanks to our awesome designers who deliver eye-catching covers.

Issue #3 – Blurb Blunders

You’ve passed the cover test. Now, readers flip to your back cover or read your online description. This moment decides your fate.

Does your blurb hook readers in seconds? Does it create questions they must have answered? If not, they’ll move on to another book.

The best blurbs create an itch readers must scratch. They promise value, entertainment, or transformation without revealing too much.

Issue #4 – Pricing Problems

Price signals value. Set it too high, and readers question if you’re worth it. Set it too low, and they wonder what’s wrong with your book.

Research shows genre expectations matter tremendously. Romance readers expect different price points than business book buyers. Know your market’s standards before setting your price.

Issue #5 – Timing Troubles

I once published a summer read in November. That mistake taught me that timing matters enormously.

Consider the reading calendar. Summer brings holiday reads. January welcomes self-improvement titles. December sees gift book purchases surge.

Plan your launch accordingly.

Issue #6 – Distribution Dilemmas

Your book must be easily available where readers shop. Limited distribution creates unnecessary barriers between you and your audience.

Modern readers expect convenience. If they can’t find your book on major platforms or their preferred format, they’ll choose another that’s readily available.

At TWAGAA, we distribute our books worldwide in multiple formats – ebook, paperback, and hardcover. We plan to start Audiobooks also, and are hoping to do so by this year’s end.

Issue #7 – Social Proof Shortage

“Should I read this book?” Today’s readers look to others for the answer.

Reviews build trust. Without them, your book appears untested and risky. The first ten reviews matter more than many realise—they create momentum that leads to more organic interest.

Dear writers, please ask everyone, all of them who rejoice in your success, to share their reviews on all marketplaces, social media, and book clubs.

Issue #8 – Content Quality Concerns

Here’s the hardest truth I share with authors: sometimes the book itself needs work.

Even brilliant ideas falter with poor execution. Editing isn’t just about fixing grammar—it’s about making your narrative sing. Rushed books with plot holes, flat characters, or confusing structures struggle regardless of marketing budget.

“But my mom and sis loved it!” isn’t market validation. Objective, professional feedback matters more than friendly opinions.

Issue #9 – Marketing Method Mismatch

Not all marketing channels work for every book. Poetry collections rarely benefit from LinkedIn campaigns. Business books might not find their audience on Instagram.

Choose platforms where your readers actually spend time. Targeted promotion to the right people beats random advertising every time.

Issue #10 – Patience Problems

“My book has been out for two months with no bestseller status. It’s failing!”

I hear this worry constantly. Book success rarely happens overnight, and not to everyone. The publishing industry moves slowly. Many bestsellers took months or years to find their audience.

Marketing requires consistency over time and across media. The authors who succeed keep showing up long after the initial excitement fades.

Writing a Book That Readers Want

Finding your audience who would lighten their wallet for your book requires quality, targeting, presentation, and perseverance. Before you start talking about your published book, examine the fundamentals listed above.

Remember: readers want to discover your book. They’re searching for their next favourite story and author. Your job as a writer is to remove every barrier between them and your words.

The dilemma is, how do you do all of the above?
